Jabal Shams, the highest mountain in Oman, is located in the heart of the Western Hajar Mountains In the Al Dakhiliyah region and is one of the most popular landmarks of Oman. Stunning views of the Al Nakhur Canyon also known as “The Grand Canyon” of Arabia, along with its mild climate through most of the year and, exciting trekking routes make this location one of the most visited by tourists and locals alike.
Jabal Shams, literally translating to “Sun Mountain” in Arabic, has been given this name as it is the first place to receive sunrise in Oman. Although it can get extremely cold In winter and parts of the mountain even receive the occasional snowfall, the average temperatures through the rest of the year are mild, and always about 15 degrees cooler than Muscat making it the perfect escape.
One of our most popular trips is the Jebel Shams balcony walk. This trip takes you on a hike along the Al Nakhur Rim Hike also known as the W6 Route, and is a casual, easy- moderate level hike. The hike begins at the Al Khitaym village and takes you downward along the rim of the canyon. You will see many stalls setup by locals along the way and as you take in the spectacular views of the canyon on your right you will make your way towards the abandoned village of Sab Bani Khamis. This is a view to stop and take in as you can see traces of terraced gardens, towers and houses in the distance.
You will begin climbing the last 200 m of a vertical 2000 m high mountain, and the adventure will take about 3-4 hours depending on the size of the group and each person’s level of fitness. Using various safety and climbing equipment including a helmet, harnesses, carabiners, and steel cables you will make your way back to the top of the mountain, while stopping every now and then to take in the views behind you and get some amazing pictures.
Although most people visit jebel shams to treat themselves to mesmerizing views of the canyon, it is important to note that this is not all the mountain range has to offer. Weather you are interested in hiking, summiting a mountain, wild camping, photography, stargazing or simply want to engage with the locals, this mountain is a one-stop shop for people of all ages and interests.
You can make your way further down towards the popular hidden water pool from where you can either choose to go back the same way or be adventurous and take the via feratta route back up.
This world-class adventure will test your stamina, leave you out of breath and have you in awe of the views behind you and your capabilities of what you can achieve. This route is certainly the more adventurous, challenging and fulfilling way back up and we recommend it to anyone who deems themselves physically fit and isn’t scared of heights.
Needless to say, this adventure should under no circumstances be undertaken without the necessary equipment and an experienced guide who is well-trained for such activities.
Once you have conquered the mountain it is now your time to relax and take in the starry night skies. Jebel shams is home to many wild camping spots, and will be whisked away to one of them for the night where you will be served an amazing dinner. Sit around the campfire, share stories of life and adventures, or indulge in some stargazing before you hit the sack for the night.
